Your jewelry should be the last thing you put on in the morning and first thing you take off in the evening.

You can prevent most jewelry tarnishing by keeping your jewelry clean and dry, and in a sealed plastic bag when not in use. To prevent brass and copper rings/bracelets from turning your skin green, take them off when washing your hands, and dry your hands properly before putting the jewelry back on. Avoid contact with lotions and oils. You can polish your piece as needed with a jewelry cloth, such as Sunshine brand, if desired.

  • Sterling silver - Sterling silver is an alloy containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% of other metals, usually copper. Sterling silver does not turn most people’s skin green from wearing it.

  • 14K Gold-filled - Gold-filled metal is a more affordable alternative to gold where a solid layer of gold (typically constituting at least 5% of the item's total weight) is mechanically bonded to another metal, usually sterling silver or brass. Gold-filled metal is a great choice for those who prefer the quality of gold but don’t want to pay the price. Unlike brass, which can turn some people’s skin green, gold filled metals leave no mark, and tarnish much less. 14k gold-filled jewelry can last beautifully for many years. However, if you leave chemicals on the surface, it can cause the gold to darken more quickly.

  • Brass - Brass is a yellow alloy containing copper and zinc. Since brass contains mostly copper, there is a slight chance it will turn your skin green, but this depends on your personal chemical makeup. Brass naturally darkens over time and will age beautifully if properly cared for using the instructions in the Jewelry Care section.

  • Copper - Copper has a reddish-orange hue, is used as a constituent of various metal alloys, and is one of the few native metals. Copper often turns people’s skin green, but this can be prevented if you keep your jewelry, especially rings, dry.
